Best Electric Skateboards: Exploring the Market

In recent years the electric skateboard market has become saturated with websites selling products that to the average consumer appear strikingly similar, yet range in price from one hundred dollars into the thousands.

Given the vast price differences it can be difficult to discern high quality products from the low quality knock-offs.

Here at Genesis we believe in sustainable transportation for everyone at an affordable cost. After all, the Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) Movement isn’t much of a movement if only the mega-rich can afford to get on board.

Yet on the other hand, an electric skateboard that costs $49.99 is likely cheap for a reason.

So how do you make heads or tails of which electric skateboard is the best bang for your buck?

To assist you in your hunt for the best electric skateboard, we’ve crafted a brief comparison of Genesis models versus some of the other major players in the LEV market.

Electric Skateboard Comparison

 Price

When approaching the electric skateboard market, the first thing most people look at is the price. As mentioned above prices vary considerably from company to company.

A closer look at the specifications for each product can at times only further one’s confusion, as the majority of electric skateboards fall within a range that does not seem to mirror the corresponding price differences.

All of our models at Genesis cost between $400-500, which beats out all of our serious competitors, i.e. companies who make boards for adults and not as children’s toys.

Below is a breakdown of some prominent E-board company’s prices:

Brand

Price

Genesis

$400-500*

Boosted

$1000-1300*

zBoard

$1300-1500*

Inboard

$1,400

Evolve

$1500-2100*

Marble

$1400

Yuneec e-Go

$700

*Depending on Model

Speed

Given the range of cost for our competitor’s boards, you’d expect them all to go significantly faster right? Wrong!

Out of all of our competitor’s listed above, only half are capable of reaching higher speeds, the fastest of which is capable of reaching 26 mph – compared to Genesis’ max speed of 20 mph.

Considering the $1,500 dollar cost of those six extra miles per hour, it’s sensible to ask, “Is it worth it?

Below is a breakdown of the LEV major player’s max speeds:

Brand

Speed

Genesis

20 mph

Boosted

18-20 mph*

zBoard

20 mph

Inboard

24 mph

Evolve

22-26 mph*

Marble

25 mph

Yuneec e-Go

12.5 mph

*Depending on Model

Range per Charge and Time per Charge

In the world of electric transportation, running out of battery power is akin to a flat tire (i.e. a total bummer!).

One of the most important specifications to consider when making your decision as to which brand of electric skateboard to buy is the range per charge, i.e. how far you can travel on a single battery charge.

If you take a gander at the list below you’ll get an idea of what to expect in the current LEV marketplace.

Brand

Range per Charge

Genesis

20 miles

Boosted

7-8 miles *

zBoard

16-24 miles*

Inboard

7-10 miles

Evolve

10-25 miles*

Marble

16 miles

Yuneec e-Go

18 miles

*Depending on Model

As you can see, Genesis lies at the upper end of range per charge, and at more than half the price!

Another related factor to consider – especially for those using your electric skateboard to commute to work (nothing worse than running late!) – is the time per charge, i.e. how long it takes to charge your board’s battery.

Again you’ll see that Genesis rests happily at the top of the pack, especially when considering the ratio of range earned per single charging session.

Brand

Time per Charge

Genesis

2.5 hours

Boosted

1 hour

zBoard

3.5-4.5 hours*

Inboard

1.5 hours

Evolve

3-5 hours*

Marble

1.5 hours

Yuneec e-Go

4 hours

*Depending on Model

Weight

Unlike a bicycle, most skateboarders don’t chain up their deck to a stop sign upon reaching their destination. The expectation is that you can carry your board with you wherever you go.  This is easier said than done with some of our competitor’s products, which reach weights of 23 lbs!

Brand

Weight

Genesis

11.6-17 lbs*

Boosted

13.5-15 lbs*

zBoard

17-19 lbs*

Inboard

14 lbs*

Evolve

17-23 lbs*

Marble

10.3 lbs

Yuneec e-Go

14 lbs

*Depending on Model

 Battery

An often overlooked and underappreciated aspect of electric skateboard composition is the type of battery used.

While most LEV’s function on lithium ion batteries (Genesis included), there are a handful of manufacturers who opt instead for lithium polymer batteries. While both batteries demonstrate leaps of innovation from nickel-based batteries, lithium ion batteries are vastly superior.

Lithium ion batteries have a greater energy density and cost less to produce.

In Conclusion

As the LEV Movement continues to evolve and consumers grow familiar with this exciting new technology, prices will likely begin to creep down.

But for now, Genesis remains the best place on the web for a great product at a fair deal.

We believe in sustainable transportation and we believe in the LEV Movement. It is why we do what we do!
