The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment and the 1992 Energy Policy Act sparked a renewed interest in the old technology that was once deemed no match for gasoline and other fossil fuels. E-bikes are classed as Zero Emissions Vehicles. A recent study in America came to the following conclusions when comparing e-bikes with other forms of transport, they are:
- 18 times more energy efficient than an SUV/ 4x4
- 13 times more energy efficient than a saloon car
- 6 times more energy efficient than rail
- About equal impact to the environment as a conventional bicycle
Given the numerous benefits of personal electric mobility, it is surprising how slow the transition to these alternative modes of travel have been in America. This is not the case for the rest of the world, where e-bikes and scooters are a normal part of everyday life for most commuters – especially in urban areas where smog, pollution, and parking are serious concerns.
